Stewarding a Healthy, Values-Aligned, Multiracial Board of Directors

Are you an organizational leader, board administrator or board chair?  Is your board of directors struggling to find its way forward in the wake of the pandemic, racial uprisings and calls for more values-aligned, anti-racist board practices? Are you looking for ways to shift your board’s composition, culture and/or relationship to staff so that it reflects your vision for a more just and equitable world? Look no further!

We are thrilled to invite you to the second of the Dragonfly Organizational Equity Clinics designed for leaders like you who are committed to driving positive change in their organizations.  

At this workshop, we will identify common challenges boards are facing and offer some strategies for overcoming these challenges including:

• Ground in what a 21st century healthy, values-aligned multiracial nonprofit board can contribute within a social justice mission-driven organization.

• Identify five key factors to examine as you consider ways to strengthen your board:

  • Relevance

  • Representation and skills

  • Board culture

  • Board/staff relationships

  • Capacity constraints and engagement

• Within these factors consider ways to shift the boards’ practices towards anti-racism:

  • Ensuring that board and staff are keeping pace with one another as the organization goes through a transformation related to race and power

  • Creating clarity about roles and responsibilities across the board and staff and being explicit about where the board has power

  • Creating structures for the board to have explicit conversations about race, class, gender and power relations within the board

  • Addressing the drivers of attrition for board members of color
